The Afternoon Show – Thursday January 31st 2013

On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace was joined by Bernard Kearney, Community Alert Development Officer with Muintir na Tire.  They discussed how the Justice Minister is insisting that the closure of garda stations will not diminish community policing. 95 rural stations are shutting down today as part of a restructuring of the network – following the closure of 39 last year. Alan Shatter says the move is not designed to deprive communities of resources – but rather to improve service quality.

Caroline Curneen from the European Consumer Centre also spoke to Gavin about how Ryanair has lost an appeal after a passenger claimed compensation for ash cloud disruption. Denise McDonagh from Terenure in Dublin took the action after Ryanair refused to reimburse her for food and accommodation costs accrued during the crisis in April 2010. Today’s decision means that airlines across Europe will have to comply with new rules governing "extraordinary" circumstances that cause the cancellation of flights.

It’s January 31st and according to many polls and surveys it’s at this time that our good intentions and New Years Resolutions are really put to the test. Clare FM’s Kiara Gannon has been finding out whether you’ve stuck to your resolutions – or not!

Graham Jones is an award winning Director and is well known for his film “How to Cheat in the Leaving Certificate”, the animated movie “The Green Marker Scare” and “Fudge 44”. He joined The Afternoon Show to talk about his new feature length movie, which will be filmed in Galway over the months of April and May.  Local actors, male and female, are being sought for the lead roles. It’s quite a different film – with a romantic theme and no dialogue between the maion protagonists!  If interested you can email casting@grahamjones.ie

Michael Mac Giolla Ri from the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (IABS) spoke to Gavin ahead of a special event this weekend. The I.A.B.S will host its annual Weekend Bootcamp in Ennis this weekend (2-3 February). Some of the UK and Ireland’s most esteemed Barbershop groups will also perform at the Danlann Theatre, Coláiste Muire, Ennis, at 8pm on Saturday. (€5 cover). The Bootcamp and concert are a precursor to the 2014 International Barbershop Singers Convention, which will be held in Ennis in October of next year and is expected to attract more than 600 participants from Ireland and abroad to the Clare County Capital.
