The Afternoon Show – Tuesday May 28th 2013

On Tuesday’s Afternoon Show Máire Moynahan spoke with John Leech of Irish Water Safety about how Primary schools are being asked to deliver their water safety programme before the beginning of the summer holidays. The warning comes from Irish Water Safety who says tragedies can be prevented by teaching children how to behave round water. Forty children have drowned in Ireland over the last 10 years – but the risk of drowning can be reduced if parents and teachers help children to stay safe around water. To mark National Water Safety Awareness Week, May 27th – June 3rd 2013, drinkaware.ie and Irish Water Safety (IWS) have launched a joint campaign to raise awareness ahead of the summer of the dangers of mixing alcohol and water based activities. On average, 140 people drown in Ireland every year, with 5 people drowning in Clare in 2011. Cork, Dublin, Galway and Mayo are among the top counties in terms of death by drowning.  The vast majority of drowning victims are male, the average age of victims is 42 years, and the majority of drownings occur inland. For more details and resources please visit www.iws.ie

Bernie Keating of Keating’s Bar and Restaurant in Kilbaha was also a guest of the show to discuss how local business and the public in general will benefit from the awarding of the title of Best Place to Holiday in Ireland for Loop Head. Locals are hoping for a significant economic boost, while Bernie is planning to hire more staff at his bar and restaurant as a direct result of the competition win.

Esther McCarthy from the Sunday World also joined the show to talk about rumours that Hollywood Director JJ Abrams is in top-level talks to shoot scenes from some of his biggest new movies in Ireland – including Star Wars and Mission: Impossible. Insiders say that Abrams is “extremely keen” to film here, so we might just see some Jedi roaming the streets of Ennis in the near future. The movie mogul has already met with leading Irish film executives to discuss his plans and has even begun to informally scout potential locations, which are rumoured to include the Burren.

Bernard Purcell, Editor of the Irish World Newspaper in London joined us for our bi-weekly look at the breaking news in the UK including what’s having an impact on the Irish community across the pond.  Today he discussed bankruptcy statistics and the number of Irish availing of bankruptcy tourism in the UK, tensions at mosques in England following the Woolwich attack and how London football club are through to the Connaught semi final after beating Sligo – their first time since 1977.

Patrick Sheehy is the Lead Singer with the group – Walking on Cars and spoke to Máire about the band’s origins and how successful they’ve become. Walking on cars is a fivesome from Dingle who since their formation last year have been making a name for themselves on the live music scene.  They’ve more recently appeared on Other Voices and The Late Late Show – their debut EP –“As We Fly South” has been well received and the band are working on new material.  Among their summer gigs is next weekend’s Feile an tSamhraidh in Ballyvaughan and Fanore where they’ll be playing on Saturday.
