The Afternoon Show – Tuesday June 4th 2013

On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace spoke with Arwen Foley from AA Roadwatch following the publication of their poll of over 20,300 Irish motorists, which shows that almost 72% said they believed that the presence of Gardaí on the roads is less this year than it was last year. Only 8.5% said they disagreed. With so many believing that there are fewer Gardaí on the roads it is not surprising that the same poll showed that almost 40% don’t think the Government is treating road safety as a priority.

Jill Kerby is the Personal Finance Columnist with the Sunday Times and also joined the show to discuss how the cutting of interest rates and perks for An Post saving schemes could force a rise in people keeping large amounts of cash at home. The cuts of up to 40%, which were announced by the National Treasury Management Agency, came into effect yesterday. The lowered returns on investments at An Post come following pressure from the banks who argued that they couldn’t compete with the State schemes.

The 11th EUSE conference (June 11th-13th), ‘Building an Inclusive Europe through Supported Employment’, is hosted by the Irish Association of Supported Employment and sponsored by the Rehab Group. It is estimated there are about 5,000 Irish people with disabilities at work through supported employment in Ireland. In Clare – the EmployAbility group undertook a creative project through the Burren College of Art.  Their clients worked with the college to create pieces of art, which will be showcased at the conference and a special documentary, produced by Kehlan Kirwan, highlighting the work they’ve done will be screened at the event in Croke Park.  To contact EmployAbility Clare please call 065 6844007.
