The Afternoon Show – Tuesday June 18th 2013

On Tuesday’s edition of The Afternoon Show Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan was joined in studio by Patrick McElligott of the Red Ribbon Project and Shannon / Drumline parent Debbie O’Halloran. Debbie spoke about how, from a parent’s perspective, she felt when her daughter told her she is a lesbian. Rainbow at Red Ribbon Project in association with BeLonGTo and LOOK are continuing to run a support group in Ennis for parents of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) people starting on Wednesday 19th June at 8 pm until 9.30 pm in Clare Local Development company on the Kilrush Road (Westgate Retail Park) Ennis. Rainbow at Red Ribbon Project also have groups in Shannon and Limerick for parents, families and friends of LGBT people. These groups create a supportive confidential environment where parents and friends can support each other and have conversations that they might not feel comfortable having with their children. Parents who have attended the group have expressed how the coming out process can leave them feeling ‘confused about what life holds for my child’ and ‘worried for the safety of my child’. This is common among parents and a space to talk about this can be beneficial. For more information please contact Patrick on (061) 310101 or email: rainbow@redribbonproject.com

Maeve Ryan is the Service Co-ordinator at the Crime Victims Helpline and joined Máire to offer some advice to holiday goers. As we enter the main holiday season the Crime Victims Helpline wants to caution people about the possibility of crime, especially in regard to burglary at home and various crimes which can occur when away from home. An unoccupied house is always more vulnerable to a burglary, so they advise that people take precautions by not leaving cash or jewellery lying around. The national helpline number is Free Phone 116 006.  The number for texts is 085 1337711.

Bernard Purcell, Editor of The Irish World Newspaper in London also joined the show for a look at what’s making headlines in the UK that’s of particular interest to the Irish community abroad.  Today he discussed the G8 Summit in Fermanagh and how London are taking on Leitrim in the football this weekend.

Dan Gallahue from the Drive to Survive Campaign for Cancer and Mary Moloney, fundraising Manager at Cahercalla Hospice also joined the show. The Drive to Survive Campaign for Cancer consists of 2 model T Trucks travelling through the 26 Counties in Ireland in an attempt to raise money for local hospices.   All monies raised in Clare will go to Cahercalla Hospice.  It was the brainchild of John Gallahue from Limerick who sadly passed away from Cancer – his son Dan is organising the event. As part of the campaign in Clare there will be a Mid Summers Evening Scenic River Walk in Kilnaboy on Friday June 21st at 8pm, followed by a BBQ. (Register and Car Park at Kilnaboy School Hall from 7pm onwards.) All proceeds from the event will go directly to services at Cahercalla Hospice.
