Joining Máire Moynahan on today’s edition of The Afternoon Show was Rita McCarthy of the Scattery Island Heritage and Tourism Group. Two medieval carvings that mysteriously went missing from Scattery Island in the Shannon Estuary more than 150 years ago have been located and are to be returned to the island as part of a Gathering event next month. According to the Scattery Island Heritage & Tourism Group the stone artefacts were removed from the former monastic settlement in County Clare by a sea captain during the mid-19th century. Their location was only identified earlier this year when the group was contacted by a local family who had kept the artefacts for safekeeping. The artefacts have been verified professionally and dated to the 12th and early 15th centuries by medieval stone carvings expert Jim Higgins (Heritage Officer for Galway City Council) and Dr Catherine Swift, Director of Irish Studies at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick. The carvings will be returned to the island on July 7th as part of the Scattery Island Gathering.
Caroline Curneeen of the European Consumer Centre also joined the show to discuss how the Centre is warning people who sign up for free online trials of so-called miracle products to read the fine print.
The Centre says people who provide credit card details usually end up being charged in multiples and can face difficulty cancelling the payments.
Amy Conroy is the Writer and Actress behind the play “I ♥ Alice ♥ I”, a new theatre show, that has just returned from a tour of Australia and New Zealand. HotForTheatre’s I ♥ Alice ♥ I started its Irish tour in May and plays at the Glór for one show only on Thursday June 20th. Amy Conroy, is the creator of this award-winning play which opened first at Dublin’s Fringe Festival to catapult the Kerry woman to great accolade and Amy then went on to stage her work at The National Theatre and consequently touring her work abroad due to the acclaim she won and rightly deserved for her work and company HotForTheatre. The play is a documentary style piece of theatre which platforms real people, with real words, about real situations – Join both Alice’s (played by Amy Conroy and Clare Barrett) who take us on the journey of their life story – warts and all.
Aidan Courtney of The Ennis Book Shop joined Máire for his weekly book review and today talked about two children’s books with strong Clare connections. Dyslexic Brains Learn Differently, written by students at Ennis National School and Nursery Rhymes from The Specs which is accompanied by a music CD.
Ennis Singer Songwriter and Guitarist Eoin Judge were also guests of The Afternoon Show today. Siomha debuted her first EP in 2011 and has since completed two successful tours of Ireland with band members Eoghan Judge (Ennis), Pat Corless and Karl Clews (both Galway based). At the end of 2012 she started to gig in London and has been coming back and fourth ever since. This Friday June 21st – She’ll perform at the Ennis Roots Weekend gig in Abbey Street car park for the Clare Connections Concert. Also on July 6th – She’ll perform a concert in Glor as part of the Ennis Street Festival. This will be a fundraiser for Clare Youth Service. Also on the night will be a one-act play by Ennis Players.
