The Afternoon Show – Thursday September 19th 2013

On The Afternoon Show this Thursday, Máire Moynahan was joined by Aoife Griffin, the Regional Manager for the West with the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to talk about beauty pageants and the groups view that they are leading to the premature sexualisation of children. The ISPCC is also welcoming a ban in France on such beauty pageants. The French parliament has voted to ban beauty pageants for children under the age of 16 in an attempt to protect children’s rights. The strong stance by the French government means that anyone entering a child into a pageant could face up to two years in prison and 30,000 euro in fines. The ISPCC is calling for a similar ban in Ireland to protect children from what it says is another example of the early sexualisation of children.  It comes as a US beauty pageant is to be hosted in Dublin this weekend.

Pauline Dunleavy from Kilrush RNLI also spoke to Máire about how the volunteer crew in Kilrush has been kept very busy in recent days. On Tuesday the RNLI crew at Kilrush lifeboat station were called to seek a boat that lost its moorings in Glin, Co. Limerick. While on the previous Sunday they were also called out to a boat in trouble off Labasheeda. The RNLI Charity provides a 24 hour search and rescue service and is independent of the Coastguard – therefore it’s dependent on voluntary donations to maintain services.

The ingredients you need for his cookies are; 150g of softened salted butter, 80g of light brown sugar, 80g of granulated sugar, 2 tsps of vanilla essence, 1 large egg, 225g of plain flour. Half a tsp of bicarbonate of soda, a quarter tsp of salt and 200g of chocolate chips.  Pre heat oven to 190 degrees Celsius, beat sugar and butter together, add beaten egg and vanilla, then sieve in the flour, soda and salt.  Mix all together with a wooden spoon and add the chocolate chips.
