The Afternoon Show – Monday September 30th 2013

Following the exhilaration of Clare’s victory over Cork, The Afternoon Show took a look back at the final moments of Saturday’s All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Replay.  Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan got the reaction and views of the Clare fans in Dublin following the victory. The final score on the day, 5-16 to 3-16, gave Clare it’s fourth ever All Ireland title and broke the 16 year wait for the Liam McCarthy Cup returning to the Banner County.

Máire was also joined by Shannon’s Amanda Hogan of the Clare Hurling Supporters Club to talk about how they feel after the weekend and their pride in the saffron and blue. The All Ireland winning Clare Senior and Under 21 hurlers arrived back in Clare last evening.  Following stops in Cratloe, Sixmilebridge, Newmarket and Clarecastle, the teams were met by a crowd of over 30,000 people in the Fairgreen in Ennis. The Fans cheered, sang and danced and expressed their hope that the boost experienced in the county throughout the past few weeks will continue. Lisa Lawlor from Clare FM Sport also joined Máire – Lisa was in the thick of the action all weekend for Clare FM and travelled home in the company of the team yesterday for the homecoming.

Lahinch brothers Matthew and Dr. Eamon Kelly were also guests of The Afternoon Show to let us know about a new smartphone app that guides tourists around the world-famous visitor attraction at the Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs of Moher Audio Guide App provides visitors with a 12-stop audio guide tour onsite which can be downloaded free of charge for iPhone/iPad or Android devices. Free Wi-Fi has been installed throughout the site at the main viewing areas and in the concourse outside the visitor centre.  Each of the 12 stops on the audio guide is marked onsite.   The launch of the app is the result of a joint venture between the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience and Lahinch native, Matthew Kelly. The mobile audio tour is voiced by Matthew’s brother, US-based Dr. Eamonn Kelly who was first assistant curator at O’Brien’s Tower in the 1970s. To download the Cliffs of Moher Audio Guide App for free, simply search for ‘Cliffs of Moher Audio Guide’ in the iPhone AppStore or the Android Market. Further information is available from the recently revamped Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience website, www.cliffsofmoher.ie

Feakle singer Kate Purcell, guitarist Bobby Sweet and Annie and Marie Burns from Ithaca in New York – together known as The Songbirds – also joined Máire in studio this afternoon for a chat and live music. The Songbirds joined up together in Ireland in 2012. Kate had a hit song a few years ago, which was written by Marie Burns called “Savannah”. Three gigs turned into twenty and the adventure began. In early 2013, Kate performed on “Andy Cooney’s Cruise of Irish Stars” in the Western Carribean, and then joined up with Annie and Marie again for her first musical tour of Florida. They are now on tour in the West of Ireland. Joining the tour will be singer/songwriter and guitar virtuoso, Bobby Sweet, a fifth generation musician from Washington, Mass. Bobby and the Burns Sisters first teamed up with a few others to accompany Arlo Guthrie on several tours as his band.  The Songbirds perform in St. Cronan’s Church in Tuamgraney tonight and tomorrow in Kilshanny House with proceeds going to Ennistymon Community Hospital.

Also on the show we heard from those attending last night’s Homecoming in Ennis for the Under 21 and Senior Hurling teams. Clare FM’s John Cooke was among the 30,000 strong in the Fair Green last night and met with people from across the county who were there to celebrate the win and pay tribute to the teams and to Davy Fitzgerald.
