Morning Focus Friday October 18

Ennis General Hospital has fared well in a HIQA inspection focussing on cleanliness and hygiene
The report published yesterday by HIQA follows an unannounced inspection of Ennis General on September 4th last
Officials assessed the Fergus and Burren Wards, both of which are in the new 50-bed state of the art facility which opened late last year
The physical environment in both wards was deemed very clean, with few exceptions, and the report states this protected people’s dignity and privacy as well as reducing the spread of infections
Regarding hand hygiene, inspectors found that while training in this area is mandatory, and that regular audits are undertaken, four of a fourteen potential hygiene opportunities were missed

On Friday’s Morning Focus John Cooke spoke with Dr Con Cronin, Clinical Director with the Medicine Directorate of University Limerick Hospital Group to get the HSE reaction to the reports.

The Bishop of Killaloe Kieran O’Reilly joined John in studio ahead of Mission Sunday this weekend
He said he hopes that in spite of the economic challenges that the government would not neglect its commitment to the developing world
Bishop O’Reilly also expressed concern at the government decision to cut the overseas aid budget by 14.1million euro saying this is the sixth year in succession that the overseas aid budget has been cut and the decision leaves us far short of the commitments that we have made at the United Nations and will have a great impact on the poorest of our brothers and sisters in the developing world
He’s also urging people of the Diocese to be generous in their support of the annual Mission appeal which takes place this weekend.
