The Afternoon Show – Monday November 11th 2013

Darren Hanniffy from Irish aid agency Goal joined Máire on today’s show. Darren is part of Goal’s emergency response team in head office. He was Goal’s first responder to the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, and understands exactly the type of situation survivors are facing, and the obstacles that aid agencies are likely to encounter as they attempt to deliver aid. The aid agency have dispatched an emergency response team to the Philippine island of Leyte, following the significant loss of life and massive destruction caused by the typhoon. They’ve also launched an emergency appeal to help support some of the people worst-affected by the disaster. Apart from the 10,000 people already feared dead, an estimated 500,000 have been left homeless. These numbers are expected to rise over the coming days. To help Goal you can see their website www.goal.ie or follow them on facebook. You can also call them on 01 2809779.

Teresa Carmody-O’Shea is a Staff Officer at Clare County Library and joined the show to talk about Library Ireland Week 2013, which takes place from 11th-15th of November. Clare County Library would like to remind people of the value of local libraries and of all the, mostly free, facilities that are available to people. The theme for the week this year is “Think Outside the Book” so there is a wonderful opportunity there to make people aware of the fact that libraries are no longer just about books e.g. libraries now have an extensive range of DVD’s and CDs, free internet access, book clubs, local history and genealogy information.

Philip Moreau from Glenbrook Nurseries was also in studio as our Gardening Expert and Horticulturist. He talked about composting and clearing your garden of leaves and answered your queries in relation to roses, rowan berries and holly!

TV Chef Donal Skehan is taking to the road and joined Máire on the show to talk about his Home Cooked Tour, which comes to Glor, Ennis on 14th November.  Donal is only 25 years of age and has achieved a phenomenal amount in just 4 years.   He is highlighting Ireland and our producers abroad both in the UK with his TV show and France and Brazil.  With his books in Germany and Sweden and Italy, in the UK with Jamie Oliver and BBC Masterchef, in the US with FOX Network Worldwide and the Today Show on NBC.  In just a short space of time he is doing a lot for our country, bringing tourists into Ireland!

Kate Sheehan from St. Gabriel’s School Dooradoyle also spoke to the show ahead of a fundraising night at the dogs in Limerick Greyhounds stadium on Friday November 15th. It’s being held to raise money for the rehabilitation and hydro therapy pool at the school – the pool is used by all types of disability groups, private individuals and more from the MidWest but takes year round fundraising to keep it open. Only tickets purchased through the school will go towards funding for the service – to purchase them call Kate on 086 387 2575.
