On today’s Friday Panel Máire was joined by Geraldine Mooney Simmie, Lisdoonvarna native and Lecturer in Education at UL, Donal O Loinsigh from An Clar as Gaeilge and Clare FM Cul Chaint presenter and also Rosin Garvey, Green Schools Travel Co-ordinator in Clare for An Taisce. They discussed how the government has revealed more details about Ireland’s new postcode system, due to be rolled out across the country next year. Known as Eircode, it will be used to locate every individual address in the State.
They also spoke about proposals that stun guns be given to the gardai. This week the Garda Representative Association said taser stun guns should be available more widely to respond to the estimated 1,000 attacks carried out on gardaí each year. Association president John Parker believed the issue of violence against rank-and-file gardaí needed to be more urgently addressed than ever as numbers in the force continued to reduce, leaving gardaí on the beat more isolated and vulnerable.
And as it’s a bank holiday weekend the panellists also talked about today’s news that people caught speeding or drink driving over Bank Holiday weekends should get double penalty points. It comes as a Dublin Labour MEP – Emer Costello – said it's a strong way to get the message across that speeding kills. She says there's been a significant drop in road deaths in Australia's New South Wales, where the double penalty-point system rule is in effect. Emer Costello says it should run from Friday to Monday on Bank Holiday weekends.
