Morning Focus – Tuesday September 1st 2015

On Tuesday's Morning Focus with Gavin Grace

Children as young as two are being treated for obesity at Temple Street hospital in Dublin, according to a leading paediatrician. Dr Sinéad Murphy said one child treated in the hospital weighed almost 30kg, double the average weight for their age-group. Affected families are desperate, she said, because of a lack of services. Many obese children suffer other health problems, including sore knees, hip and back pain, and difficulty breathing. Almost half have high cholesterol and high blood pressure. With more on this, Dr Cliodhna Foley-Nolan Director, Human Health and Nutrition at Safefood spoke to Gavin.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most famous moments in maratime history. Over 70 years after its sinking, the wreck of the Titanic was discovered 12,000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, south of Newfoundland. More than 1,500 people perished when the ship sank in April 1912, after it had struck an iceberg. The dead included 20 year old Martin McMahon of Cragbrien, Ennis and 35 year old Daniel Keane of Gallowshill, Cratloe. 19 year old Mary Agatha Glynn from Slievenore, Flagmount was remarkably saved. Only a handful of people have seen the Titanic since it sank, including Dublin diver Rory Golden had more about its discovery three decades ago today.

Once it was French wines that reigned supreme on Irish tables, before Australian reds and whites took over the mantle. But local drinkers have a new champion in the popularity stakes when choosing from wines lists and the off-license shelves. The latest market report from the Irish Wine Association (IWA) showed Chilean wines were the highest-selling drops in the country for 2014. John McDonnell Wine Enthusiast based in Ballyvaughan and Formerly, Wines of Australia gave shared his thoughts on this with Gavin.

Judges in the District, Circuit, High and Appeals courts are generous. And they are getting even more so. But it is easy to be generous when it is someone else's money you are handing out. When they make a higher award it feeds into higher insurance premiums. This is because higher judgments, and their associated elevated legal costs, create a new precedent and insurers then have to put aside more reserves to meet future awards. That is one of the key reasons motor premiums have rocketed. Making higher awards feeds a corrosive compensation culture. And judges seem remarkably incapable of spotting a fraudulent or exaggerated claim. Charlie Weston Personal Finance Editor had more on this.

As students go back to college, we're learning this morning about a course which is more CIA than CAO.
