Council adopts Draft Traveller Accommodation Programme

It’s claimed Clare’s Draft Traveller Accommodation Programme discriminates against local communities and doesn’t deal with the problems of temporary encampments.

The plan for 2009-2013 was passed by a 17 to 6 majority of Clare County Councillors last night who described it as comprehensive and fair.

However some alleged it allowed members of the travelling community permanent residency after three years while others seeking to build or buy have a much longer wait.

Others like Clarecastle councillor Bernard Hanrahan are concerned it doesn’t address the problems of illegal encampments or the plans put in place to prevent them.
