Figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show 789 people were left waiting for beds at University Hosptial Limerick in November, a 45% increase on the same month last year.

The situation has improved somewhat in recent days but nonetheless, across the year, there has been a near 10% rise in trolley numbers at the region's main hospital.

At Ennis General Hospital, the level of overcrowding has more than doubled this year so far, with 310 people on trolleys between January and November, up from 122 in the same period in 2015.
