German newspaper, Die Welt  is citing a police chief who says they have got the wrong Pakistani man.

Twelve people are confirmed to have died after a truck ploughed into crowds at around 8.15pm local German time yesterday evening.

If confirmed as an Islamist terror plot, yesterday’s attack on the Christmas market will be the 5th lone wolf offensive in Germany in recent times.

German sources say the main suspect is a 23-year old man of Pakistani origin who came in to the country 6 months ago.

Speaking in Germany today, Chancellor Angela Merkel says it will be terrible to learn if the person turns out to have been a genuine asylum seeker.

However, Roderich Kiesewetter MP for Germany's CDU Party and a member of the German Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs committee says the man is a terrorist masquerading as a refugee.

The European intelligence agency, Europol has been warning of further terror threats in Europe, and Roderich Kiesewetter says German must too be on higher alert.
