A new report from the Department of Transport's found that 24 percent of the county's tertiary road network is in a severely delapidated state.

The Performance Indicators in Local Authorities Report finds problems across all categories of regional roads in Clare.

One percent of regional roads here are identified as being 'in severe structural distress'.

This means they urgently need repair to avoid becoming dangerous or unusable.

Three percent of primary roads fell into this category, as did six percent of Clare's secondary roads.

It's the network of tertiary roads – more commonly referred to as 'boreens' – that's in the poorest condition, however.

The finding that almost a quarter are in need of repair, or, in some cases complete rebuilding, means the county's tertiary roads are among the worst in the country.

Only five countys had a worse networks. These are in Galway, Cork, Sligo, Roscommon and Offaly.
