Over a hundred people gathered at O'Connell Square yesterday afternoon to highlight their concerns over the numbers of people waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick and delays experienced within the ambulance service.

The protest was organised by the Friends of Ennis General Hospital, who are calling on the Health Minister to re-open the A&E at the county hospital, despite warnings that the necessary equipment and staffing have been stripped from the facility

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey believes measures need to be taken to increase capacity in Ennis, St John's in Limerick and Nenagh.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister is due to visit a number of hospitals this week to check in on the number of patients on trolleys.

The total reached over 600 on two days last week, and at the weekend dropped down to around 300.

Simon Harris will go to a number of hospitals in the coming days, and is due to meet the HSE tomorrow for a further update.
