A recent review of rail services listed the Ennis-Athenry line as one of the worst performing in the country, and that every journey taken by a passenger on the line is costing the taxpayer 44 euro.

The line opened in 2010 at the cost of over 100 million euro, and closing it could save 2.85 million a year for Irish Rail, which is facing significant financial challenges.

However, Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard thinks that would prove to be costly for Clare.
