The alert has come from Ennis-area Fianna Fáil Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy, on foot of a Dáil answer issued to her party colleague Deputy John Brassil.

The Kerry TD says he received a number of queries from constituents who were concerned about the validity of their cover, and says some insurers expect drivers to alert them when they've received penalty points, as soon as they're received.

If the companies aren't informed, cover could become invalid.

Around 6,300 Clare drivers were penalised last year and Councillor Colleran Molloy says many could now be leaving themselves exposed.

It comes as a major clampdown on uninsured drivers is to be implemented as part of new plans to tackle spiraling premiums.

The 71-point action plan also includes the creation of a data base of fraudulent claims, and a commission to look at levels of insurance awards.

It also recommends that insurers must explain the reasons for price hikes to customers.

CEO of Insurance Ireland, Kevin Thompson says some of the recommendations will create challenges for the industry.
