An urgent call has been made to Transport Infrastructure Ireland to prioritise the road into Shannon Airport for significant upgrade works.
The part of the N19 closest to the Airport, from the end of the dual carraigeway to Knockbeg Point Roundabout, is a single-lane road and local representatives have expressed fears that a serious accident or even an oil spill could lead to the closure of the route, and the Airport itself.
Clare County Council says it has pressed TII for funding, and has called the route one of its priorities.
Shannon-area Fine Gael Councillor John Crowe thinks the national body now needs to treat it as such.
