€170,000 Spent By Clare Candidates In General Election

The figures have been published by the Standards in Public Office Commission who have also referred one of those candidates to Gardaí for failing to provide documentation.

The Standards in Public Office Commission has sent 66 files to the Gardaí in relation to the possible breaching of laws around elections.

23 of these relate to people who failed to provide any documentation at all, and include Fís Nua candidate Niamh O'Brien and also her election agent.

Today's release also show that Dr. Michael Harty incurred the highest expenses of any Clare candidate in the election, at over 28,600 euro.

He was the only Independent to claim more than 10,000 in expenses.

The three Fine Gael candidates incurred nearly 14,000 more in expenses than their three Fianna Fáil counterparts.

Mary Howard of Fine Gael and Labour's Michael McNamara incurred the highest amounts of expenses by party candidates, at just over 18,500 euro. 

This figure includes expendidure by their respective parties.
