The comments come as the numbers waiting for outpatients appointments has soared from 11 at the end of 2015 to over 1,500 at the end of 2016.

New figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund found that over 1500 people have been waiting at least 18 months for an outpatients appointment at University Hospital Limerick.

That figure was just 11 this time last year.

There has also been an increase in Ennis, as well as a rise in waiting lists for inpatient and day cases at both hospitals.

In a statement to Clare FM, the UL Hospitals Group insists it met waiting list targets for day case and inpatients last year.

It also said there has been a significant growth in demand for outpatient procedures, an increase in the number of urgent referrals in some specialist areas and a shortage of consultants in others.

The statement also outlines plans to maximize capacity to cater for patients who have been left waiting for over a year.
