Trade unions are up in arms over planned pay cuts designed to fix the transport firm's financial problems, and industrial action looks increasingly likely.

Wage increases of  between 1 and 3 percent have been offered to Bus Eireann employees – but bosses have also announced a range of cutbacks and changes of conditions.

Management say they're essential to protect the firm's financial future.

But now industrial action is looming and the NBRU union, which represents workers across the transport sector, says staff in Dublin Bus and Irish Rail could go on strike in sympathy

Any strikes which could see the public transport system grind to a halt could be expensive for communities throughout the country.

Here, fears have been expressed that tourism-dependent areas in particular will lose out.

While the Cathaoirleach of County Council says locals too will also lose out.

Councillor Bill Chambers of Cooraclare has called for all parties to enter into talks and try to broker a deal.
