The council's says it's not enough, but hopes it marks the end of a series of annual funding cuts, while local representatives have been giving their reactions too.

Almost half of the funds unveiled for Clare will go towards road improvements; with a further €1.8 million going towards maintenance work.

€3.1 million has been budgeted for discretionary grants, and the total amount is 750 thousand euro more than elsewhere.

That's led to Council Senior Engineer Tom Tiernan saying he hopes the reductions in funding have ended.

The money includes a big spend on bridges, including one million euro for Latoon Creek Bridge which is on the route between Clarecastle and the M18 motorway.

However, that's not even enough to cover the full cost of rehabilitation works, according to Tom Tiernan.

Given the one million euro money for Latoon Bridge, one former Clare Mayor believes this year's funding falls a long way short of what's required.

Killaloe area Fianna Fail councillor Pat Hayes argues that once it's taken into account, Clare's 2017 allocation is actually down on last year's.
