The HSE has approved for the design phase of a new 96-bed acute unit at University Hospital Limerick.

It's hoped that more of the €25 million required for the facility will be made available under the national capital plan review, taking place in the coming months.

Currently, €1m for the design stage acts has been allocated as a 'seed fund' by the HSE.

It comes as, for the third day in a row, UHL is the most overcrowded hospital in the country, with 38 people waiting for admission.
