New figures obtained by Clare FM, show over 12-hundred cases were investigated by the local authority last year, but only 131 fines were issued.

The number of complaints to Clare County Council for littering or dumping fell last year, from over 1,300 to 1,237.

But only 131 fines were issued, and of these only 49 were paid.

The Council's Environmental Awareness Officer, Karen Foley says people must take responsibility for their own litter, regardless of their personal circumstances.

Ennis Councillor Mary Howard is hitting out at those who take part in littering, saying those responsible have become increasingly crafty in hiding their identity.

The Fine Gael Councillor, who's a member of the tidy towns committee, is urging people to report any activity they encounter:

Anyone who wishes to report illegal dumping is urged to contact the Anti-Litter Hotline on 1800 606 706.
