In a statement the 36 year old says 2016 is "the end of the road" for his career, and has thanked the British public for their support "through thick and thin".

Wiggins became the first Brit to win the Tour De France in 2012 and won 5 Olympic gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze.

His Tour De France victory has been mired in controversy after it emerged he received a number of TUEs, or Therapeutic Use Exemptions, prior to the 2011 and 2012 races as well as the 2013 Giro D'Italia.
