Education Minister Announces Plans To Boost Language Studies

Ireland needs to make a ‘very significant step up’ in language skills to be the best location for education and training in Europe.

That’s the call from Education Minister Richard Bruton, who has announced plans to beef up requirements in secondary schools.

The plan aims to have every Junior Cert student studying a foreign language by 2021, as well as boosting the take up at Leaving Cert level by 10 per cent.

Options like Polish and Portuguese will get a proper curriculum, while Chinese will also become a Leaving Cert topic.
