The Exterminator General Of Clare – And The Priest Who Stood Up To Him

Marcus Keane was a landlord and landlord’s agent during the Famine and was dubbed the Exterminator General of Clare for his role in evictions during the famine.

Fr Michael Meehan found himself at odds with Keane and celebrated mass in the Little ark, against Keane’s wishes.

Both figures are discussed in a new book by Dr Ciarán Ó Murchadha who is a teacher in St Flannans College and one of the Country’s leading figures on the famine. He’s giving the April lecture of the Kilrush and District Historical Society this evening, ahead of which he talked to Gavin.
