Students of St Joseph’s Secondary School in Spanish Point were sent home this morning and the school shut it’s doors after it was discovered that it had been broken into for the second time.

Thieves gained entry to the building overnight and caused considerable damage within a number of offices but it’s understood they left empty-handed.

A garda forensic investigation has been carried out this morning and the school is expected to open again tomorrow, with repair works being carried out today.

Principal Mary Crawford says they were left with no choice but to close the school today.

Earlier this month, a significant sum of money, which included a collection for charity was taken when the school was targeted in a separate incident.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Hillary has condemned those involved in both incidents.

Gardaí in Ennistymon are investigating and are appealing to anyone with information on the incident, or who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area, to contact them on 065 707 2180.
