11 Injured In Poolbeg Incinerator Accident

11 people have been treated in hospital after an incident at Poolbeg Incinerator in Dublin.

A small amount of lime was accidentally released during testing at the new plant.

The plant here only started burning waste this day last week after taking its first delivery at the end of April.

Late last night a small amount of lime was accidentally released during testing inside the flue gas treatment area.

11 men working on nearby scaffolding recieved treatment on the scene and were taken to St Vincents’ Hospital as a precaution, with two men hospitalised overnight.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan says the incident needs to be fully investigated.

Dublin City Councillor for the Social Democrats Cian O’Callaghan says it’s not acceptable.

Health and safety authority inspectors are on site and it is closed to workers at the moment.

Early investigations suggest this was caused by a problem with a door seal.

Covanta, the company that runs the incinerator, says none of the lime released escaped into the environment.
