Patient For Hepatitis B Contracted Through Blood Transfusion

A patient is being treated for Hepatitis B after getting the virus through a blood transfusion.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service has confirmed a case of transfusion transmitted infection of Hep B.

It says the donation was made in the window period when the presence of the virus cannot be detected even by the most sensitive tests available.

The IBTS says this is a rare one in two million event – and does not have any implications for blood that will be transfused in the future.

The patient is now being managed by a medical team.
