Harty Concerned For UHL Capacity For Winter Flu

Clare’s Independent TD insists an expected influx of flu this winter will push the region’s main hospital to the brink.

University Hospital Limerick has seen a recent spike in the level of overcrowding, with in excess of 50 patients on trolleys each day last week.

This is despite the opening of a 17-bed short stay unit in a refurbished section of the old emergency department in recent months to help ease pressure on the new ED.

Plans for a new 96-bed unit are progressing to the planning stage but Dr Michael Harty, who’s chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health, is worried that winter levels of overcrowding hit early:
