Irish Sign Language Officially Recognised As Independent Language

Irish sign language is now officially recognised as a native and independent language.

Earlier this month the Oireachtas passed the Irish Sign Language Bill 2016 – and now President Higgins has signed the legislation into law.

The bill will benefit 50,000 members of the deaf community here, who can now use the language to access state and court services.

Senator Mark Daly first introduced the bill back in 2013. He says this is an important step.
