Spike In Overcrowding At Region’s Main Hospital

There’s been a massive spike in the level of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital today.

The latest figures from the INMO show 57 people were left waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick this morning, 43 of those in the emergency department.

It’s the most of any hospital in the country and is 17 more than the next busiest facility.

Trolley numbers had peaked at the beginning of the month as an outbreak of the flu began to take hold, but had been on a downward trend in recent days.

The HSE is giving a briefing today on the current impact of the flu outbreak and the uptake of the flu vaccine, but the INMO’s Dave Hughes says the flu is not the main cause of overcrowding.
