It’s hoped the Shannon Estuary will be at the forefront of the marine renewable energy sector with the installation of an underwater turbine near Kildysart.
Limerick based firm DesignPro Automation has secured €2.7 million in funding to test a 60 kilowatt hydro-kinetic turbine for a year-long trial.
The turbine would use the force of the moving water to generate power and an information night is to be held in Kildysart Community Centre next Tuesday for members of the local community.

Róisín McCormack, Sales and Marketing Manager with DesignPro Ltd, says they’re hopeful of securing the support of locals and that they can develop the project even further.
