Over €100,000 Spent On Garda Overtime Tackling Burglars In Clare

Over 100 thousand euro was spent in Clare last year on overtime for Gardaí targeting burglars

The crackdown on burglaries has led to the high-profile arrests of criminals throughout the country since its introduction over two years ago, including here in Clare.

First announced in late 2015, Operation Thor has been a high-profile effort by the Garda to crackdown on burglars and criminal gangs.

It targets prolific offenders, and aims to allay the fear associated with crime, especially in rural areas.

It has also led to dozens of operations by Gardaí in which criminals have been arrested and goods seized.

That includes in Clare, where the past year saw sixteen criminals arrested as part of one county-wide crime crackdown in June, as well as a large number of co-ordinated searches in November and the arrest of four men who were attempting to break into a home in West Clare in January.

The Justice Minister has told the Dáil that just under 9.5 million euro has been spent on overtime as part of this operation.

€104,507 of this has been spent in Clare – only seven other Garda Divisions have had a smaller spend.
