Morning Focus opened with a discussion of the deepening controversy surrounding the CervicalCheck programme, following the tragic case of Vicky Phelan from Annacotty.

Gavin spoke with Limerick TD Jan O’Sullivan of the Labour Party who voiced her concerns in 2008 when it was decided to outsource smear test analysis to laboratories in the US.

Then the show turned to the issue of mental health of farmers, following the fodder crisis. Gavin spoke with Geraldine O’Connell, Clare Representative on the IFA Farm Family and Social Affairs Committee who is holding a walk at Ballycurregan Woods, Twomilegate on Sunday (May 6) at 12pm.

Gavin then heard from FF TD Billy Kelleher who chaired last week’s party selection convention in Ennis where Dr John Hillery and Dep Timmy Dooley were chosen as candidates in Clare.

Tommy Corbett of Carey Corbett Financial Services in Ennis then joined Gavin in studio with some invaluable advice on financing the cost of home building.

The show then had a special report on the ‘latte levy’ has been deferred for now. The show heard from Terry Fox of CupPrint, Ennis, who is a leading producer of recyclable and compostable cups, as well as from some Clare cafe owners who are offering discounts for those who bring in their own reusable cups.

May Day traditions were remembered and celebrated through interviews with Michael Fortune a folklore collector and lecturer at the Limerick School of Art & Design and legendary story-teller Eddie Lenihan.
