Drop In Number Of Clare Women Travelling To Britain For Abortions

50 women gave addresses in Co. Clare when they underwent an abortion in Britain last year.

The figure is the lowest recorded in the past decade.

At least 50 women travelled from Co. Clare to undergo an abortion in Britain last year.

The actual figure could be higher, however.

229 Irish women, out of a total of over 3,000, did not state a county when giving their addresses.

It means that, approximately, one Clare woman travelled across the Irish Sea for an abortion each week last year.

However, that’s the lowest figure of the past decade – as recently as 2015, the figure was over 50% higher at 81 throughout the year.

Experts have suggested that the growing use of abortion pills bought online could, in part, explain the fall-off of in recent years.

Last month’s referendum to repeal the Eighth Amandment means access to abortion is set to be greatly expended in this country, although the government has already said that the new laws to enact this are unlikely to take effect until 2019.
