Post Office Closures Labelled ‘Planned Attack’

Clare’s Fianna Fáil TD has called the closure of 159 post offices nationwide ‘a planned attack’ by An Post and the Government.

Fianna Fáil has published a motion calling for the retention of post office services in the communities where the branch is set to shut, including six in Clare.

This decision by An Post to shut has already seen significant backlash in some quarters.

Here in Clare, a series of public meetings have been held while the move has been crticised by the county’s TDs.

Fianna Fail is now proposing a bill for when the Dáil returns which aims to stop the closures.

It would involve An Post receiving an extra 8 million euro a year to keep the post offices open.

The party’s Communications Spokesperson Clare TD Timmy Dooley says it’s vital to protect services:

Joining Communications Minister Denis Naughten at today’s committee meeting will be representatives from An Post and the Public Banking Forum of Ireland.

Among them will be Chairman of the Independent Postmasters Group Clarecastle-based Tom O’Callaghan.

He’s calling for some realism from the government on the future of rural Ireland:

The committee meeting is due to get underway from 2.
