Clare’s Senator is calling for the Housing Assistance Payment scheme to be increased significantly, to help those struggling to access social housing.
Under HAP, local authorities will make a monthly payment to a landlord on a tenant’s behalf, while the tenant pays a weekly contribution towards the rent to the local authority.
The Housing Minister says a review of the scheme needs more time but that Clare is not performing badly with HAP, with 1,272 tenants on the scheme here.

However, Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway feels the criteria for the scheme must be raised to help people struggling to pay rent.
