Former Clare TD’s Complaint Against RTE News Upheld In Part

A former Clare TD has had a complaint against RTE News upheld in part by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Ex-Labour representative Michael McNamara lodged a complaint in respect of coverage of court proceedings in January of this year in which he was the defendant.

Mr. McNamara alleged that the Six-One broadcast was not presented with due accuracy, as certain details were omitted, including parts of his defence and his acquittal on some charges.

RTE said they could not include this in their report in their evening news bulletin as they did not receive the story, which was filed by a freelance journalist, until 6:23 that evening.

However, the BAI’s compliance committee said the broadcaster did not take sufficient steps to ensure they had complied with the principle of accuracy, as set out in a BAI code.

In the hearing, Mr. McNamara was facing charges arising out of an incident close to his home at Tobernagath, Scariff on December 2016.

He was cleared of obstructing a Garda in the course of his duties, but fined and handed a two-year driving ban after he was found guilty of dangerous driving.

That decision is under appeal.
