Clare’s Direct Provision Centres Over Capacity

Both of Clare’s Direct Provision Centres are over capacity.

According to figures from the Department of Justice published in the Irish Times, the Knockalisheen centre in Meelick and the King Thomond in Lisdoonvarna are among five centres in the country that are over subscribed.

A large majority of the country’s 83 direct provision centres are close to being over subscribed.

Centres in Meath, Laois and Cork were also housing more people than had agreed under the terms of their contracts.

By the end of last week, 5,928 men, women and children were living in direct provision – while 202 people, who have recently arrived, were living in temporary accommodation.
