Claims Up To 110 Clare Jobs At Risk Over VAT Hike On Health Supplements

It’s claimed that up to 100 jobs in County Clare could be at risk, due to a proposed increase in the cost of health food supplements.

From March, a VAT rate of 23 percent is set to be imposed on products like fish oils and vitamins – a move which retailers believe could make the sector uncompetitive, and force local shops to shed jobs.

In addition, it’s estimated that the price hike in vitamin products, could cost individual customers – especially those who are elderly and sick – an extra €250 a year.

Fergal McNamara of Ennis Health Store says the price hike represents another threat to employment in rural Ireland.
