Clare’s Independent TD is calling on the government to mount an “extraordinary response” to the challenges facing Ireland’s health system.
Dr Michael Harty has once again been lobbying the government to implement Sláintecare, the 10-year plan to reform the sector, which first came to light in May 2017 but has yet to progress.
The Taoiseach, meanwhile, has defended the government’s handling of the situation, saying bed capacity is increasing, while they’ve made significant progress in improving conditions for staff.

However, Deputy Harty feels the health service as it stands will not be able to cope in the short term, let alone beyond that:
