Shannon Pharmacist Admits Codeine Addiction Is “Difficult To Police”

A Shannon pharmacist says it’s very difficult to police the so-called “epidemic of codeine addiction” in Ireland.

A study released by the Irish Medical Journal has highlighting concern about those who are overly reliant on over-the-counter pain killers.

While restrictions are in place on quantities that can be bought in one go, the research suggests people may be “codeine shopping” between multiple pharmacies.

Withdrawal symptoms include chills, nausea and anxiety but Feidhlim Hillery of Hillery’s Pharmacy in Shannon says it’s only a minority of people who end up in this situation:
