The 437 homes which received planning permission in Clare last year is down by 13 on the year before.

The drop-off is seen in applications for multi-development houses or, in effect, housing estates, as there was actually a small rise in the number of one-off houses which received the green light.

Construction levels have picked up over recent years – the figures for the past two years are generally in line with that of 2010, but that’s still a a long way back on the height of the economic boom which regularly saw permission granted for over 2,000 houses and apartments each year.

The new CSO figures also show permission was given for 247 other types of development in Clare last year, along with 219 extensions and another 92 alterations or conservations.

Nationally, there was a big surge in the number of proposed new home builds, up by around 8,500 on the year before.
