Gardaí Say Upgraded Breathalysers Behind Increased Drink Driving Detections

Clare motorists are being warned they’ll need to be more responsible in their driving, to avoid being caught under the influence.

It’s after Gardaí released figures showing that the number of people caught either drink-driving or drug-driving more than doubled in the first three months of this year.

47 people were arrested for the offence between January and March, up from 21, but Gardaí say much of this increase is because of new equipment which allows them find out on the roadside whether drivers have drugs in their systems.

Some have argued that Gardaí have policed drink driving too vigorously, particularly since the new automatic disqualification penalties were introduced, but Ennis Superintendent Brendan McDonagh says they’re doing their job
