The loss of his council seat by long serving Lahinch based FG member Bill Slattery has continued to cause controversy in North Clare.

He narrowly missed out in the race for the restored 4-seat electoral area of Ennistymon when ballots were counted in the early hours of last Sunday morning. On Monday, he told Morning Focus of his dismay at the party strategy in the weeks leading to polling day. On Thursday we were joined by FG member of Seanad Éireann, from Ennistymon. Senator Martin Conway.

There’s been a huge out pour of sadness at the deaths of two Irish men – Kevin Hynes of Galway and Wicklow man Seamus Lawless – who died on the slopes of Mount Everest. It’s raised concerns that too many people are attempting to climb the treacherous mountain all at once, with images showing ‘queues’ for the summit. West Clare Hotel owner & Everest climber John Burke tell us first hand how treacherous the journey and summit can be.

 

Doonbeg in West Clare is expected to be heavily guarded  ahead of the arrival of the US President of next Wednesday. Donald Trump is expected to spend two nights at his luxury golf resort and use it as a base for his brief European visit. A family-friendly “protest peace camp” is expected to coincide with the arrival of the US president when he meets Taoiseach Leo Varakdar at Shannon Airport. Edward Horgan from Shannonwatch, one of the groups involved in the protest told us why he is planning to protest.

 

On Thursday’s Morning Focus, Gavin spoke with Dr Emer Kearney on how to the intrinsic and extrinsic factors like diet, smoking and pollution can determine how your skin ages.

 

Claire Power from the Trading Faces Stage School & Casting Agency is offering a day of free workshops with professional theatre coaches comes to Glór, Ennis next Sunday week (June 9). Claire and her team will cater for kids aged 5 to teens, and it’s tipped as a day of acting, singing and dancing, with a chance to learn news skills and boost confidence.

 

There is a estimated 15-hundred people living with dementia in Clare. The life-changing condition has huge impacts for individuals and families. Dr Suzanne Timmons, Clinical Lead of the HSE’s National Dementia Office is urging people who are unaffected by this condition to support those who are, by becoming a ‘dementia champion’ in your local area. This can include things like making your workplace or social group more inclusive.

 

St Flannan’s Cathedral in Killaloe will ring to the sounds of opera this evening as it hosts the Irish premier of ‘Pimpinone’ a comic opera produced in partnership with Opera Collective Ireland. It’s as part of the annual Killaloe Chamber Music Festival which has an exciting programme of musical events over the coming weekend.
