War of Words Erupts Over Mayor’s Comments On Rainbow Housing

A war of words has erupted on social media, after the Mayor of Clare described the Rainbow Housing initiative as a retrograde step.

The accommodation, which is the first of it’s kind in the country, is reserved for students who wish to live together in a house or apartment, that supports the LGBT and allied community at the University of Limerick.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Cathal Crowe says he’s an ally to the LGBT community, and will host a number of events never before held in Clare, during his term in office.

But he’s told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that he fears that segregating students might be counter-productive in fostering a spirit of inclusion.

The Vice President of Academic Affairs at UL Student Life says Rainbow Housing its designed to provide a safe space for students in need of additional support, and that hundreds of applications have already been received.

Colin Lynch, from Carrigaholt, says it’s not fair to say that students are being segregated.
