Medical Sector Troubles Could Take ‘Decades’ To Turn Around

A Lahinch GP is expressing concern that it may take “decades” to turn around Ireland’s troubled medical sector.

The Irish Medical Organisation’s pre-Budget submission is calling on the government to release more funding to help address their recruitment crisis.

It says there’s a consultant shortfall of up to 72% in some key specialities, as they struggle to hire and retain medical staff who are opting for work overseas instead.

Dr Michael Kelleher, who is an IMO GP Committee member, says there’s no overnight fix but funding is a key component of it:

The Health Minister, meanwhile, says he wishes to see talks with representative bodies on pay parity commence next month.
